While I normally wouldn’t think to get psyched from watching wave pool surfing in the middle of Texas, this is a different circumstance in a time where wave pool technology has proven to be legit, and here to stay. Lost Surfboards Team x The BSR Pool is yet another film from 2020 that I couldn’t quite get out of my head. When Matt Biolos uses travel restrictions, during a pandemic, as an opportunity to get his team riders to the BSR wave pool in Waco, you can expect nothing less than fireworks. It was an all out aerial assault. These guys and girls came and brought the heat!
What makes this film unique are all of the different camera angles, which you can only get from a wave pool, not to mention all of the back-to-back aerial nonsense that happens at different frame rates, during the day and night. As a shortboard fanatic, and admittedly I am a fan of Mayhem boards, I liked how the credits in the end reveal exactly what boards each surfer was riding; this is something that I think surf films should do more often.
So, when Coco Ho, a Hawaiian native says, “That was so fun…I want to live here,” that might tell us something about what’s happening in Waco, out of all places. Add some fun country music and some Texas longhorns and you’ve got a truly entertaining Texan surf flick.
